Bavarian Brewing Competition

Congrats 4 Hearts (Pilsner) & Black Hops (Marzen) for Winning the Inaugural Brewing Comp!

Background

Oktoberfest Brisbane is Australia’s most authentic German Festival, promoting the best of Germany, including its beer and, importantly, a healthy beer drinking culture.

This invitation-only Bavarian Brewing Competition seeks to furthers our mission to encourage brewers to brew authentic, traditional beers in strict accordance with the traditions of the Reinheitsgebot {Bavarian Purity Law}.

We aim to introduce, and further educate, beer lovers to high-quality, fresh and true-to-style beers. In addition to promoting the finest German brewing traditions, this competition aims to highlight the beauty of locally brewed beer.

What’s involved

Two beer styles have been nominated, Pilsner and Märzen. The seven* brewers have had their names randomly drawn to brew one of the two styles with four brewers assigned to each style.

The beers will be judged through a people’s choice vote. A number of bars across South East Queensland will be participating in mini Tap Takeovers through September, during which the four beers of each style will be served together on a tasting paddle and you will get the chance to vote on your favourite.

Judging will be blind. You will know which brewers created beers for the competition, but you will not know which beer is from which brewer. You will only know the style of beer which you are tasting.

At Oktoberfest Brisbane, a dedicated Bavarian Brewing Competition Bar will feature on the festival site to serve tasting paddles, where you can come taste and vote across both weekends of the festival (6-8 & 13-15 Oktober). In addition, an expert panel of judges will taste and score all entries on the last day of the Festival (Okt 15), leading into the announcement of the Champion Brewery and awarding of the trophies.

*Due to unforeseen circumstances, Newstead Brewing was unable to submit a beer for the brewing comp, so Balter had an entry in each type.

Tap Takeovers

Happening throughout September, leading up to the Festival, various bars and pubs in Southeast Queensland (and one in NSW!) will join in for the Bavarian Brewing Competition Tap Takeovers where you can taste pallet of the specially brewed beer and vote for your favourite.

Join the family!

Who’s Competing?

Burleigh Brewing Company

Burleigh Brewing Company

Burleigh, QLD

Following the move to the Gold Coast in 2002, Head Brewer Brennan Fielding began the first stages of Burleigh Brewing Co with wife Peta. The aim was to build a locally focused craft brewery in which could maintain a community minded approach.
With extensive brewing experience picked up over his years spent in Hawaii, Japan and Tasmania, Brennan has been awarded a continual stream of gold medals at the World Beer Championships. Burleigh Brewing Co has continued these achievements without compromising the original mission, with every beer made by Brennan and his team alone.

Balter

Balter

Currumbin, QLD

Founded by a group of seven mates, including professional surfer Mick Fanning, Balter has burst onto the craft beer scene with a brew that doesn’t take itself too seriously, focusing on and celebrating the experience.
Bringing on board former Stone & Wood Brewer Scotty Hargrave was the perfect match in creating what the boys had set out for. With Hargrave’s having won two AIBA awards for his previous work, Balter has stepped out confidently into the craft beer scene. The boys at Balter, however, have maintained that their connections with small, local venues is something of great priority to them. With the positive responses heard from both venues and consumers over the last year, Balter has exceeded all expectations and proved it is more than just a publicity stunt.

4 Hearts Brewing

4 Hearts Brewing

Ipswich, QLD

Created by local boy Wade Curtis, 4 Hearts Brewing has driven the craft brew scene in Ipswich. Taking inspirations from his travels in Europe, drinking many beers along the way, Curtis began to experiment with home brews before training with two seperate German brewers. His love and passion for brewing came to a head when the first batch was commercially released in 2011. Since then, 4 Hearts resides in Pumpyard Bar and Brewery, a freshly redesigned 100 plus-years-old building. This unique setting has become the perfect place to host over half a dozen of 4 Hearts brews.

Slipstream Brewing Company

Slipstream Brewing Company

Yerongpilly, QLD

Founded by Deale & Elisa Stanley-Hunt, Slipstream Brewing Co is the latest addition to the ever-growing Brisbane beer scene. Although a longtime craft beer enthusiast and passionate home brewer himself, Deale appointed Ian Watson to take the reigns as Head Brewer. For Ian, Slipstream Brewing Co follows a succession of successful stints at both Fortitude Brewing Co and Murrays Brewing Co. Holding the title of Australia’s first professional beer sommelier, Ian is expected to do great things at Slipstream.

Green Beacon Brewing Co

Green Beacon Brewing Co

Teneriffe, QLD

Beginning with a long-held dream by schoolmates Adrian Slaughter and Marc Chrismas, Green Beacon has flourished in the foodie hub, Teneriffe. Drawing inspiration from their time spent in cities like New York and London, Adrian and Marc have passionately created an established and unique beer experience with the help of head brewer, Johann van der Walt.
This year, the pair have purchased a 670sqm industrial space in Geebung to extend their reach and to increase supply to a newly-signed deal with Emirates Leisure Retail Australia.

Brouhaha Brewery

Brouhaha Brewery

Maleny, QLD

Brouhaha Brewery was founded by locals, for locals, in mid-2016. After nabbing Matt Jancauskas, former production manager at London microbrewery Beavertown, Brouhaha began to experiment with fresh fruits and produce, creating a unique and boundary-pushing brew. Using a double batch approach, Jancauskas is able to experiment even further with flavours, creating anything from a Raspberry Saison to a Passionfruit IPA.

Blackhops Brewing

Blackhops Brewing

Gold Coast, QLD

The core of Black Hops Brewery is simple; three mates who love beer wanted to open a brewery together. Eddie Oldfield, Michael McGovern and Dan Norris began this story by commercially brewing a batch of stout and selling out in a few hours at a Brisbane bar. After two years of brewing, Black Hops Brewery opened to the public. This quaint and welcoming environment maintains their dedication to staying close with their consumers. The mix of their tried-and-trusted core range as well as experimental small trial batches continues to keep fans and consumers on their toes.
